Same-Day Movies: HUGE
Apple has announced that they will now be able to sell movie downloads the same day as the DVD is
released. This is huge.
It's huge because it strengthens Apple's core strategy: make it
easy for consumers to choose iTunes over other means and providers
of content distribution.
While this is big news, it's not the complete story. Apple might
well have created a bit of inertia towards simultaneous release of
movie content on all platforms. That's the Holy Grail. It's what
consumers want.
Simultaneous release on all formats represents
choice. Nothing more. Movie studios, like their bizarre music
studio counterparts, still think it best to dole out content "their
way." They're wrong to continue doing it they way it has always
been done. Consumers want choice.
Apple is, demonstrably, in the consumer's corner. Sure, critics
argue that Apple is a for-profit business, but business can be on
the side of the consumer _and_ make money. It's that simple.
While we're likely a long way away from simultaneous movie releases
across the board, this is one step closer to a fully dismantled
barrier to content. Thanks for pushing the issue, Apple. It made a
difference.
